Murals the Freezer

For Cultural Center and Hostel The Freezer in Rif, Iceland, I created a series of murals in various bedrooms. Each room tells its own story from the rich Icelandic folklore and mythology, allowing guests not only to spend the night, but also to immerse themselves in the island’s centuries-old tales.

Each mural is inspired by a character or legend closely connected to Icelandic culture:

• Hrafna-Flóki tells the story of the Viking who found his way to Iceland with the help of three ravens. The design subtly incorporates the Vegvísir, a traditional Icelandic symbol for protection and finding the right path.
• The Fate of the Young Trolls is based on the legend of Bárður Snæfellsás. The playfully depicted young trolls appear carefree, while their tails already hint at the tragic fate that, according to the myth, awaits them.
• Skaði, the Norse goddess of hunting, winter, and mountains, symbolizes strength, independence, and the inseparable bond with the rugged mountain landscape. The mural depicts her return to the mountains, the place where she truly belongs.
• The Mermaid is a tribute to the fishermen of Rif. Mermaids played an important role in the stories and superstitions of seafarers: they could bring a safe passage and calm seas, but at the same time served as a seductive warning of the dangers of the ocean.
• Dancing Elves brings the hidden world of the Huldufólk to life. According to Icelandic folklore, elves live among nature and dance by moonlight among flowers, birds, and butterflies. To this day, these stories are part of Icelandic identity.

With this series of murals, every bedroom becomes a unique experience where art, history, and local stories come together. In this way, each space contributes to the special atmosphere of The Freezer and gives visitors the chance to experience the magic of Icelandic folklore up close.
