This mural was created in the first weeks of the coronavirus pandemic, at a time when the world did not yet know what lay ahead. The portrait shows a nurse with a tear on her cheek, while her hand holds her face mask. The question remains deliberately unanswered: is she taking off her mask because the crisis is over, or is she putting it on because everything is just about to begin?
With this work, I wanted to capture the uncertainty, vulnerability, and tension of that moment. Healthcare workers stood on the brink of an unprecedented period, while no one knew how great the impact of the virus would be.
The mural is a tribute to everyone who worked in healthcare during the pandemic. At the same time, it is a historical document that reminds us of a period in which the whole world was confronted with the same question: is it over, or is this just the beginning?
