the Maasduinen

An ode to the landscape of the Municipality of Bergen in North Limburg. 

This mural was created in collaboration with Reggy Bruine de Bruin and commissioned by the Municipality of Bergen (L) and Stichting Limburg Straalt (Fleur Lemaire and Ellis Visser).

With dimensions of no less than 17 meters wide and 3 meters high, this is our first painted viaduct in public space. In just one and a half weeks, we added thousands of details, resulting in a work of art where landscape, symbolism, and history blend seamlessly together.

The design brings together the three characteristic landscapes of the municipality: National Park De Maasduinen, the Maas river, and the vast meadows. On the horizon, the church of Well, which was destroyed during the Second World War, can be recognized. In the foreground, the oldest marksmen’s guild in the Netherlands is depicted: the marksmen’s guild of Well. A nice detail is that this guild regularly parades through the Maasduinen in real life as well.

To keep the mural looking beautiful for a long time, it has been finished with a transparent anti-graffiti coating. This way, the artwork is better protected against weather conditions and vandalism, and it can be admired for many years to come.
